Wordpress 2.8 “Baker” after Chet Baker has been Official Released…now I have a ton of work to do!

From what I could gather…bigger better (theme + widget interaction), faster scripting. The latest version killed like 800 bugs and added 180 features. Word (no pun intended).

Yesterday I made it out to see “The meme master” Tim O’Reilly speak on a Government 2.0 focused panel discussion at the Center For American Progress.

The Zero’s Thoughts & Insights On The Event

Major Problems

1. Scale

2. Delegation & Clearance

3. More Voting & Polling DIY

4. Security

“Yes there is a risk in using Facebook apps, but what is the risk of not allowing our people to use web 2.0?”

Senior Staff Working Hard and readall the 10K Comments It is not possible to read them all

Concepts

Diplomacy 2.0 – The Art of 21st Century State Craft

Ideas

“Machine learning on a sensor databases.” – Tim O’Reilly

Top Quotes From the Government 2.0 Panel Event

“There authenticity of a conversation is central to anything in social media.” – Tim O’Reilly

“When you push new media you are more then likely excluding an important part of society” – Alec Ross

“Building systems that get better the more people use it is the heart of web 2.0″ – Tim O’Reilly

“Most of my new media friends spend more time dealing with lawyers then social media.” – Alec Ross

“The first opportunity in new media is so critical, people are paying attention and intereseted in what you want to stay.” – Tim O’Reilly

“(Social Media) A new lateral means that inherently breaks silos.” – Tim O’Reilly

“Social media is a messy space an the government does not play or work in messy spaces.” – Alec Ross

“We are in for a messy exciting time.” – Tim O’Reilly

  • Alec Ross – Senior Advisor for innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Cap Released Three Government 2.0 Reports

  1. Six New Media Challenges – Legal and Policy Considerations for Federal Use of Web 2.0 Technology
  2. It’s Not the Campaign Any More – How the White House Is Using Web 2.0 Technology So Far
  3. How to Buy Free Software – Procuring Web 2.0 Technology for the Federal Government

Constructive Feedback on The Event

  • Not enough time given for audience questions.
  • The facilitation for audience questions was disorganized & inconsistent.
  • The audience kept wasting questions asking about specific political people that the panelist could not comment on wasting the limited question time.  It should have been made clear from the beginning that panelists would not answer questions about specific political individuals, it would have made the event more productive on both sides.

Today the White House was tweeting about the CDC, and I clicked through some of their links to discover that the CDC has busted out with an entire array of web Widgets to educate the public on the swine flu pandemonium that is happening. They are distributing public health information to the people who in turn are seeding their blogs / websites and turning them into mini-digital health billboards all over the internet. Now lets test a few out and see how well they work in wordpress!

Results of CDC Widget Test

Tried to post 4 widgets but the first two of them did not work the first time.  I had to keep messing with the code and updating the blog post about four times to get all four of them to work.  The other two worked straight away.  Could have been a little more friendly, but sometimes with widgets you just have to tweak them a bit.

Thank you CDC + your social media team for having a social media strategy and using it to accomplish a clear mission: educating the public on the swine flu! We want to see more of these widgets as major outbreaks occur, health problems crop up or just to unvail the truth and dispell media fueled myths.

At 2:03PM today the White House released a blog post called “Whitehouse 2.0″

whitehouse20_blogpost2

Go read the White House 2.0 blog post to see the Obama & the White House team continuing to “walk the walk” by using social media tools to promote “Health 2.0″ and the CDC’s eHealth efforts to use social web technologies to better serve the American people. More specifically they are at pushing these two URLS in the blog post:

Center For Disease Control – Swine Flu: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/
